ADHD Q + A
What is ADHD?
ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a condition associated with limited attention spans, difficulty remaining still for long periods of time, and high activity levels. In many cases, boys receive ADHD diagnoses during their early school years.
While ADHD is more common in young children and teenagers, adults can also have this disorder. The symptoms associated with ADHD can change over time and continue into adulthood, and many adults aren’t aware they have the disorder.
What are the symptoms of ADHD in children?
ADHD causes symptoms that are organized by type: inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive. You can also have a combination of symptoms.
Inattentive
These types of ADHD symptoms typically include forgetting about daily activities, losing things regularly, and daydreaming or being easily distracted. You might also find it challenging to organize or finish tasks, listen, or follow directions.
Hyperactive/Impulsive
Common symptoms associated with hyperactivity/impulsivity include restlessness, excessive talking, inability to sit still or stay quiet. It’s also common to interrupt others, blurt out answers, and appear to be always in motion.
What are the symptoms of ADHD in adults?
ADHD symptoms are often different in adults and typically include:
- Low self-esteem
- Punctuality problems
- Chronic forgetfulness
- Problems in relationships or at work
- Lack of organization
- Being easily frustrated or bored
- Mood swings, depression, or anger management issues
Adults with ADHD can also have addiction or substance abuse problems.
What causes ADHD?
The exact cause of ADHD isn’t known, but certain factors might lead to the disorder, including:
- Chemical imbalances
- Brain changes
- Genetics
- Exposure to toxins, like lead
- Brain disorders or injuries
- Interruptions to fetal brain development during pregnancy
Too much television, food allergies, or lack of discipline doesn’t cause ADHD.
What is the treatment for ADHD?
Dr. Z reviews your symptoms, discusses your personal and family medical history, and performs a physical exam.
After reaching a diagnosis, Dr. Z typically recommends a variety of therapies to control ADHD symptoms, including:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Complementary treatments, like stress management or mindfulness techniques
