PTSD Q + A
What is PTSD?
PTSD is a mental health condition that develops after experiencing a traumatic event such as an active shooter situation, combat, natural disaster, or personal assault. Physicians initially identified the condition during World War I as combat fatigue.
Today, mental health professionals understand that any experience that makes you feel like your life is in danger can trigger the condition.
Most people experience heightened anxiety symptoms after a traumatic experience. For most people, these symptoms fade with time. On the other hand, PTSD usually emerges later, and instead of going away with time, your symptoms become more intense and disruptive.
What are the common symptoms of PTSD?
PTSD causes four distinct types of symptoms: intrusive memories, avoidance behaviors, negative thoughts and feelings, and reactive symptoms.
Flashbacks and nightmares are examples of intrusive memories. Many patients have such vivid memories that they feel like they’re reliving the trauma. You might also go out of your way to avoid people or places that trigger your memories.
PTSD causes negative thoughts and feelings about yourself or others. You might feel like other people are evil and untrustworthy. You might also feel guilty, angry, or afraid. Your negative thoughts might cause you to withdraw from friends and family or lose interest in previously enjoyed activities.
You might also have reactive symptoms such as a short temper or being easily startled, or might engage in reckless or self-destructive behavior. Many patients also have reduced concentration and insomnia.
When should I talk to a doctor about PTSD?
You should contact Dr. Zeshan if you have any concerns about PTSD. When you start treatment early, you can heal your brain and psyche, reducing the overall disruption and distress. When left untreated, PTSD symptoms can severely impact your ability to function in your day-to-day life and your relationships with friends and family.
How is PTSD treated?
Dr. Z provides personalized treatment plans to relieve PTSD and restore your quality of life. He begins with an assessment of your mental, emotional, and physical health to develop their understanding of your condition and needs.
Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Z might prescribe medication to relieve your symptoms and recommend counseling. You might benefit from individual or group therapy. Dr. Z might also recommend practicing mindfulness or meditation to train your brain to stay in the present moment.
